Summer handled the introductions

Charred corn and ripe peaches met on one platter and did not need much else.

A platter of charred corn and peaches on a worn outdoor summer table.

The grill had done enough by the time the corn came off: dark edges, warm kernels, and the kind of smoke that reaches the table before the plate does. Peaches went beside it because the counter had been full of them all week.

We brought the platter outside with herbs, a little salt, and no further ceremony. The sweetness and char found their balance without a complicated sauce or a long list of instructions.

The complete recipe keeps the proportions and the useful equipment close for the next evening that calls for the same easy arrangement.
