We set the trestle table under the maple while the light was still good, an hour before anyone was due. The lantern was lit first, and the cider went out in its chipped jug with two tumblers beside it; the far end of the table kept the last of the daylight, and the near end went lantern-lit almost at once. The bread stays under the cloth until people arrive. Do you lay the whole table early, or leave the last of it until you hear a car on the lane?

We carried the trug out to the yard bench this morning with the last of the tomatoes and a handful of green beans, so we tried laying the harvest out in the open air instead of carrying it straight to the kitchen. The bench is spoken for until the dew lifts, so the potted seedling shares it. Do you leave a harvest out on the bench, or carry it in?
