Journal field note

Flowers and curtains before company

A small welcome arranged before the afternoon light moved across the room.

Marlowe opening linen curtains while Tate places fresh flowers on a farmhouse mantel.

The room needed air more than anything else. We opened the curtains, shifted the chair toward the window, and let the farmhouse light reach the mantel before setting out the flowers.

There was no large reset underway, only the kind that happens before company arrives: clear one surface, straighten the books, put water in a vase, and leave the room looking like people actually live there.

The quiet preparation made space for the afternoon without making a show of it. That is the kind of everyday scene we keep returning to in the Journal.
