Journal field note

Savannah kept its own time

A slow start under the live oaks, then the city opening one square at a time.

Forsyth Park fountain framed by live oaks and Spanish moss in Savannah.

We started at Forsyth Park before the heat gathered, when the fountain could be heard from the path and the live oaks held the morning in shade. The first hour made a better plan than any map.

From there, the squares gave the day its shape. A bench, an iron gate, and a shaded corner each offered a reason to slow down before the river changed the scale of the city again.

Our Savannah field note carries the fuller route, including the walks and excursions that fit naturally around a day with room in it.
